The Green Burn project is a 2007 Green Man theme attempt to get the entire fire conclave to burn one of the various bio-fuels instead of petro-chemicals for burn night 2007. It is our belief that even a few conclave groups converting over to Bio-Diesel or Bio-White will make a significant advancement in public awareness of alternative fuels. Whereas the entire fire conclave spinning with bio-fuels would make a great statement about the feasibility of alternative fuels both in and out of the fire performance field. Further, groups or individuals choosing to continue use of bio-fuels will constitute an small but ongoing victory against global warming. The ideal situation will be to be able to offer the entire conclave a fully organic product made without petrol at any step. Ultimately, several replacements could be offered, imitating White Gas, Kerosene, Lamp oil and diesel gasoline. However, since innovation cannot be rushed, we have 'greener' fuels available from distributors around the country that will suffice for rehearsals until the 'sweet and neat' biofuels become available. First and most readily available is Biodiesel. This is an extremely long chain fuel with a high flash point, so it's properties are similar to lamp oil. It is readily available at alternate fuel stations around the country. Many places do not offer B100, or "neat BioDeisel", so some people may have to work with B99, a form of bioD made with petrochemicals in the process, then removed later. A list of fueling stations throughout the country is now available. The next thing is Ethyl Acetate, or as we have come to dub it, Bio White. This is a polar solvent that is made in exactly the same way as bio-diesel, except with the shortest possible starting reagent: Acetic Acid (instead of Vegetable oil). It has proven to be a workable replacement for White Gas. A long list of chemical supply companies can be garnered from a web search, but our initial testing reagents in bio white were from Fischer Scientific. But further investigation revealed that Pharmco offered the same product at 1/4 the cost, or roughly the same price as white gas. The next fuel is one of the 'greenest' yet (pun intended). The folks at Magic Corona have been bought out and the colored fuels have been twinked a bit so that they come from all non-petroleum sources. So, now you can spin colored fuel, even green, and still spin a "green" fuel. Available from several sources, but they've been at eOilCandles for a long time, and they have the MSDS. More fuel replacements are planned, including the ultra green Bio diesel, but this should get other interested groups started... |
